Buckwheat is a short season crop usually grown in cooler climates. It yields a very dark honey, with a pungent, earthy aroma and rich, malt-molasses flavour. High in minerals, especially iron, and antioxidants, it is often used for treating coughs. Its strong flavour makes it popular in hearty baked goods and barbeque sauces, or as a replacement for maple syrup. We like to eat a spoonful as a treat.
